If you have a little one (or a few!), then there’s no doubt that you’ve heard about the must-have toy of right now: play couches.

Not only do they encourage open-ended play, but they also save your actual couch from destruction. Talk about a win-win!

In this article, I’ll break down the ins and outs of two popular play couches: Yourigami and Nugget. I’m rating these couches in six categories: design, size, customization, price, manufacturing, and durability.

These innovative brands have revolutionized kids’ playrooms, but which one reigns supreme in 2024?

Nugget VS Yourigami: The Basics

The Nugget and Yourigami are both popular play couch options for kids, offering versatile configurations for imaginative play. Let’s explore how these two brands compare:

Nugget: The Ultimate Classic Play Couch

The brand Nugget Comfort launched the original Nugget kids couch on Kickstarter in 2014, and a star was born. The ingenious design, paired with the almost infinite configurations, gave the Nugget certified viral status and has become a must-have for playrooms everywhere.

With the Nugget couch, you get four foam pieces:

  • Two foldable base cushions (one thinner, soft foam base and one thicker, sturdy base.
  • Two wedge cushions

The base setup of this design is a couch that’s perfect for any playroom or living space.

Offered in luxe fabric options like corduroy, double-brushed microsuede, and lots of fun colors, you won’t feel the need to hide when guests come over. For only $5, you can get samples of all the available fabrics, making it easy to find the best option for your family.

These four pieces can be used for endless, creative configurations. One moment, the Nugget is a rocket ship, and the next, it’s an obstacle course. I’ve created 31 fun Nugget arrangements, and I’m sure there are more!

The original kid’s couch is suitable for kids one and over and is even a comfy spot for parents to get cozy. The covers are easily removed and can be thrown in the washing machine, making cleanup a breeze.

Nugget Comfort offers lots of great upgrades for their kid’s couches, like optional waterproof liners and separate covers – hello, mix and match cover colors! They even now offer a second design called The Chunk, which is great on its own or paired with the original Nugget.

Yourigami: The Origami-Inspired Play System

A yellow Yourigami play couch is showing off the four pieces in the set.

This new toy idea inspired lots of Nugget couch alternatives, and the Yourigami is a fantastic budget option.

With the Yourigami couch, you also get four foam pieces:

  • Two foldable base cushions (one thinner, soft foam base and one thicker, sturdy base.
  • Two triangle pillows

Yourigami play couches include some very clever features like built-in side pockets and handles to make the set easy to move around your room.

The soft zip covers are also removable and machine washable, which, let’s be honest, is a must. Unfortunately, fabric samples and separate covers are not available at this time.

Even though this product is extremely similar to the Nugget, Yourigami advises this is only for children 3+. This is an important consideration if you have babies in your home.

The foam used by Yourigami is not as high quality as the Nugget, so it feels more firm. This can be great for building and playing but not as great for sleep.

If you don’t want to spend a ton of money but still want a great play couch, the Yourigami might just be the perfect sweet spot.

Nugget VS Yourigami: Key Differences

At first glance, both of these kids’ couches might look exactly the same, but there are a few key design differences. I’ve broken these two play couches down into six categories, and I’m sharing my overall vote at the end:

Round 1: Design and Aesthetics

If you are picky about the fabric colors and types, then you will have way more options with the Nugget. Both brands change their color selections often, but the Yourigami couch is only available in four colors at this time.

The Nugget’s fabric quality is supreme, and its color choices make it a clear winner in the design category.

My Vote (Design + Aesthetics):

The Nugget

Yourigami

Round 2: Size

The Nugget is slightly larger than the Yourigami couch, so you have more room to spread out for naps. The Yourigami is a little smaller, which is great if you have limited space.

Overall, the two base cushions by Yourigami are four inches shorter in length, which is an important consideration for growing kiddos. In my opinion, this category is tied since it depends on your living situation.

My Vote (Size):

The Nugget

Yourigami

Round 3: Customization Possibilities

The original Nugget has more customization options, while Yourigami has more standard designs.

Nugget Comfort has two design options, the original play couch and The Chunk, while Yourigami has four unique designs.

The Chunk is fantastic if you have a smaller house because of its slightly smaller footprint (it’s designed to look like an ottoman!) Yourigami offers a really fun fort and castle, which I just love.

At the end of the day, both brands work well together, so you can expand your collection and create the ultimate sofa by mixing these sets together. Think of all the playtime that could happen with a Chunk plus a fort!

Yourigami is a strong contender since they have way more options regarding cushion shape. But the waterproof liners and extra covers make the Nugget the winner by a hair.

My Vote (Customization):

Round 4: Price Point

The Nugget is the original design, so it’s no surprise that the price is a bit higher. To make things more difficult, this brand pretty much never offers discounts.

If you are more picky about the fabrics offered and are looking for the most comfy sofa, it’s hard to beat the Nugget. This higher price may be hard to stomach, but it’s super durable and will likely be with your family for many years.

The Yourigami is about $50 less than the Nugget, so if it comes down to just price, this is your clear winner. If you don’t mind the slight size difference and the firmer foam, why not save $50?

My Vote (Price):

The Nugget

Yourigami

Round 5: Manufacturing and Origin

If you are a fan of furniture made in the USA, then the Nugget is for you. Their products are completely designed and manufactured in the USA, and their facilities are in Butner, North Carolina.

Yourigami is also a USA-based company, and a lot, but not all, of their work, is completed stateside. Their foam is produced in the USA and Mexico, and their covers are made in China. Their final product is assembled in the USA.

Nugget is the way to go if you are willing to pay a little more for products made in the USA.

My Vote (Manufacturing):

The Nugget

Yourigami

Round 6: Durability and Materials

Both brands use foam and washable covers, but there are some differences:

The Nugget has been around for over a decade and has proven how durable its quality is. Since you can buy extra covers separately, you can get extra life out of this purchase.

Nugget Comfort’s designs are all Greenguard Gold certified and use Certi-Pur-US® foam, the highest safety standard of foam.

One Nugget downside is they have exposed zippers, which have been known to mark up walls pretty badly. It won’t hurt to keep some extra magic erasers on hand.

The foam used by Yourigami isn’t as high-quality, so it’s more more firm and likely to get saggy over time. However, they also use CertiPUR-US® certified polyurethane foam, which is eco-friendly and durable.

My Vote (Durability):

The Nugget

Yourigami

And The Winner Is?

Yourigami is a strong contender, but the Nugget wins in the end:

My Vote (Overall):

The Nugget

(4.41 overall)

Yourigami

(3.75 overall)

Yourigami lost the most points in the design category because of its lack of fabric and cover options. But to me, the Nugget is the winner because it’s just hard to beat their incredibly original design.

Real User Reviews and Testimonials

One thing you can be certain of is that both of these brands are wildly loved by kids and parents alike.

The Nugget has over 31,000 reviews on its website and a 4.9 rating, which is quite frankly shocking. Yes, it’s hard to trust an individual company’s website, but honestly, I personally don’t know anyone who loves their Nugget.

On Amazon, the Yourigami has over 630 reviews and a still very high 4.5 stars.

That’s a Wrap!

As we’ve seen, both Yourigami and Nugget offer unique advantages for creating dynamic play spaces in your home. While there are tons of Nugget couch alternatives, the Yourigami is one of the best, most affordable options you will find.

The Yourigami provides a more affordable alternative with a slightly smaller footprint, while the Nugget boasts American manufacturing and a well-established reputation. These are both excellent options, and it’s hard to make a mistake with these choices.

Investing in quality play furniture isn’t just about fun-it’s an investment in your child’s development and imagination. So, which modular marvel will you choose for your little ones’ next adventure?

Cheers!
