Searching for quality curtain rods seems like one of those jobs that shouldn’t be that hard – but wow, it is.

The price of custom curtain rods might make your eyes bulge out, and budget options are flimsy and basically worthless.

But I recently bought curtains weighing 15 lbs per panel, and I had to find the right curtain rods for the job pronto. Our home in Charleston, SC, has plaster walls from 1930, and I was very worried about anything holding up.

Fortunately, I found an amazing company. This is not a sponsored post or an ad (because I don’t believe in those), but I can’t recommend these curtain rods more.

A Full Breakdown Of My Favorite Ultra-Strong Curtain Rods

This company is called Blast Home (yes, it’s a little silly), and while they have their own website, I ordered everything from Amazon.

Shipping and Packaging

With Prime shipping, my order came in just a few days, and I was immediately impressed with the packaging (something not often said about Amazon purchases).

I’m kicking myself because I didn’t take photos of the packaging when I opened these curtain rods. They send an extra set of each hardware piece, as shown below.

The install hardware came in its own special kit, and everything was extremely well labeled. Since this was so clear, you can tell right away if anything is missing (because what’s worse mid-install).

Curtain Rod Hardware

The weight of this hardware is seriously impressive. All parts (except for the rod) are heavy, solid metal. The brackets have a streamlined design that looks much more expensive than it is.

One of the things that I like the most is how the brackets are designed. They use a hidden mounting plate, so there are no visible screws on the brackets. The design is easy to install and get level and looks seamless.

There are six available finishes, and I went with the Tuxedo Black. I wanted this to match my home’s original 30s cast iron light fixtures, and I was super worried that the finish would be too shiny. (It also looks great with our Eames Chair.)

My plan was to use some Rub N Buff if I didn’t like the color, but I’m so glad I got to skip that step. Fortunately, the finish look is perfect, and I couldn’t be happier with the results!

Each set comes with the following:

• Fixed rod (or rods)
• Adjustable brackets (the number depends on the width of your set)
• Connecting screw for rods (if your width is too long)
• x2 Endcaps
• Mounting hardware (screws + wall anchors)
• Hex key
• Instructions

From here, you only need a drill (or we used a screwdriver), a level, and a small hammer for the anchor bolts.

Adjustable Brackets/Fixed Rod

This may be counterintuitive, but you can adjust the lengths of the brackets but not the actual rod (more on the rods later).

The adjustable brackets are perfect if you have very thick curtains that need to hang further from the wall. Our curtains are reasonably thick and look great in the shortest position.

Curtain Rod Weight Capacity

When my curtains arrived, I was shocked at how heavy they were. I had a bit of a panic attack because I was worried these rods wouldn’t hold the weight.

After looking through the instructions, their website, and the Amazon page, I couldn’t find the recommended capacity. I emailed customer service and got a response in under an hour!

Blast Home recommends that each bracket can hold 15 lbs of weight. They noted that this is a conservative estimate, and the brackets have shown in tests to hold 20 lbs per bracket. That means my one 8′ rod can hold a whopping 60 lbs!

Crisis averted.

Easy Installation

It couldn’t be easier to mount these curtain rods. To get the best results, follow the instructions in the install pack.

I chose to wall mount the brackets, but it’s also possible to ceiling mount. The provided anchors were perfect, even on my ancient plaster walls.

We installed curtains with two 4′ lengths and one 8′. The 8′ set included two 4′ segments that are held together with a mounting screw.

You can’t see the connection once the two segments are joined since it’s hidden behind a bracket. Also, some very expensive custom rods work like this since it significantly reduces shipping costs.

The Argument For A Fixed Length Rod

The biggest downside to this brand is actually the biggest plus – these rods aren’t adjustable.

The reason I ended up purchasing these specific curtain rods is because they are not telescopic. Whether buying a budget option from Amazon or a super pricey set from Restoration Hardware, almost all rods are extendable.

This may sound like a good thing at first. You get the perfect size curtain rod for your window, right?

In my opinion, this couldn’t be more wrong.

The rod of an extension or telescopic rod visibly tapers over the width. Not only does this cause the annoying catching of curtain rings, but it also looks cheap.

And if you spend over $300 for one rod, that’s just not what you want.

Many blogs and designers will give you tons of “rules” about how to hang curtains. This is fine and good, but the actual position and dimensions should depend on your room’s visual proportions.

It’s a good idea to extend the width of your curtain rods beyond the width of each side of your window by a few inches. This will make your space feel more full, and the results will help your space to feel more luxe.

The thing is, this overhang “should” be between 6-12″, although there are many reasons to go over or under. Anyone who tells you there is a specific dimension here doesn’t know what they are talking about.

For example, I have two windows on either side of my fireplace, and the spacing is tight. Each curtain rod will hold one fabric panel. If I extended my curtain rods 6″ or more, the design would look awkward.

Just FYI, the curtain rod on my larger window has a 7″ overhang on either side, and the smaller windows only have a 3″ overhang.

Whether you ceiling mount or wall mount your curtain rods, you have wiggle room in the width. So, most of the time, you can choose one of the set dimensions available here and still have fantastic results.

Long story short – do what works best for your space and what looks the best to you.

How Much Weight Can Curtain Rods Hold?

Standard curtain hardware can usually hold up to 25 lbs. Heavy-duty hardware is needed for weights over 25 lbs.

No matter the hardware you choose, always double-check the capacity before purchasing. I got lucky with my results because returning large items is never fun.

I talked about this before, but these curtain rods can hold 15 lbs (and maybe even 20 lbs) per bracket. My 4′ curtain rods can hold 30 lbs, and the 8′ one can hold 45 lbs – and this is conservative.

Add-Ons

Initially, I purchased the matching curtain rings from this brand. They were beautiful, but the eyelet was too small for my pinch-pleat curtains.

Instead, I used this 1.5″ ring set, which was a fraction of the price and looks great!
